Dr. Nicholas Heintz is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. Dr. Heintz joined the faculty of the Department of Pathology in 1983. He leads laboratory studies focused in the molecular mechanisms that regulate cell proliferation and apoptosis in normal cells exposed to environmental agents. Currently, Dr. Heintz and his team are concentrating on cancer cells, specifically exploiting perturbations in redox signaling to develop new therapeutic approaches to treat malignant mesothelioma and other solid tumor types.

Dr. Heintz has been a notable leader in graduate education at UVM. He served as both a member and chair of the Graduate College Executive Committee, and as a member of the Graduate College Standards Committee, the Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) Graduate Program Steering Committee, the CMB Education Committee, and the Graduate College Umbrella Biosciences Program Committee. In addition to these roles, Dr. Heintz served as the Director of the Cellular, Molecular and Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program, the largest interdisciplinary graduate program in the biosciences at UVM.

Dr. Heintz has also held leadership roles at the Vermont Cancer Center from 2002 to 2006, which included Director of the DNA Analysis and Flow Cytometry Cores and Leader of the Cell Signaling and Growth Control Program. Dr. Heintz was awarded the National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health (1979–1983) and the Senior Research Service Award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (2001–2002).
