Independent International Travel for Students

All UVM students traveling for conferences, research, internships, clinical rotations, etc. require approval from the UVM Office of International Education.

  • Undergraduate student research abroad, funded (in part/whole) by UVM and/or bearing UVM credit
  • Graduate student research abroad, funded (in part/whole) by UVM and/or bearing UVM credit
  • Any independent travel that is funded in part or whole by UVM (for example, competition or conference participation)
  • Going abroad as part of a club that receives SGA funding
  • Any independent travel supported by UVM (e.g., a UVM faculty member directed you to participate in this experience)

Requesting UVM Approval

Body

To register your independent international travel with UVM, email travel.study@uvm.edu with your name, travel dates, and travel destination(s). We will open a record on your behalf in GoAbroad and send you instructions for completing it.

Requests should be submitted at least six weeks prior to intended travel to allow sufficient review time.

Approval Process

Body

After completing the forms in GoAbroad, your request will be reviewed for approval. Considerations include:

  • Destination(s): UVM will not generally approve travel to destinations considered elevated risk by the US Department of State and/or our emergency assistance provider.
  • Activities: Certain activities may require additional approval and review by UVM's International Travel Advisory Group (ITAG).
  • Timing of Travel: Late requests may not be reviewed on a timeline that would allow the travel to proceed as scheduled. Please plan ahead.

If your travel is approved, we will send you important approval information, including information about the University's travel and medical assistance provider, which approved UVM international travelers have access to.
