SciShield is the new online lab registry (as of 2/20/2023). Principal Investigators (PIs), or Lab Supervisors are able to access the database using their UVM NetID and password.

PIs must use the SciShield Wizard to initially setup their lab, add their lab spaces and set up permissions for individuals, such as their Lab Safety Officer. Update your SciShield information every 6 months so the information stays current and so emergency responders have current information.

Emergency responders who may use this information include the following:

  • Environmental Health and Safety staff
  • Burlington Fire Department
  • UVM Rescue
  • UVM Police Services
  • Physical Plant personnel

Online lab registry information is critical and may be used before entering a lab during an emergency situation.

Online Lab Registry in SciShield

  1. All spaces under one Principal Investigator's (PI) purview can be listed in SciShield. If you are unsure which lab spaces to associate with your lab group, please contact safety@uvm.edu.
  2. Identify all individuals who work in the lab using their UVM NetID
  3. Add emergency cell phone numbers for the PI and the Lab Safey Officer.
  4. Chemicals inventories need to be added using the ChemTracker function in SciShield. Safety data sheets can be accesses in ChemTracker.

Emergency Contact Door Sign

Emergency contact information can be printed in SciShield. The SciShield door signs can list the hazards in the lab and PPE required to be worn in the lab. Emergency names and contact phone numbers should be updated regularly.

UVM Physical Plant personnel and/or local emergency responders will refer to the online and lab door sign information when they are trying to contact appropriate lab personnel during an emergency.

Since emergencies often take place during non-business hours, the phone numbers listed on the emergency sign should be cell phone numbers not office phone numbers.

Emergency responders can also access this important information while en route to an emergency in your building. This information is not available to the general public.

Shared Labs

Create emergency contact door signs in SciShield so the door of any shared lab spaces identifies all users. Equipment or areas specific to lab groups must be labeled with the Lab Supervisor’s name and a contact phone number. Lab door signs for shared spaces should include contacts from each lab group.
