On September 25th, the Larner College of Medicine hosted the Dean’s Celebration of Excellence in Research Awards ceremony. These awards recognize the many accomplishments of faculty, staff and trainees within LCOM. Dr. Zhang-Petersen was in her resident research year in the Department of Surgery and is the first author of “Changes to the US Preventive Services Task Force Screening Guidelines and Incidence of Breast Cancer” a manuscript published in JAMA Network Open. Her research found that despite concerns of increased breast cancers due to decreased screening, the data shows that there were no increases in advanced-stage breast cancer or the proportion of cases treated with total mastectomy. These findings provide reassurance that the guideline changes did not lead to substantially worse breast cancer outcomes on a population level. Her paper has attracted national media attention and has been viewed over 5,000 times in less than a year. To access the full manuscript, follow this link to the JAMA Network Open.
