Karen M. Lounsbury, Ph.D., is a Professor of Pharmacology, the Director of the Master of Medical Science program, and the Assistant Dean for the Pre-clinical Medical Curriculum. Her research explores vascular cell signaling where she is intrigued by calcium- and hypoxia-regulated pathways in cardiovascular disease and cancer. Her work has been funded by the NIH, NSF, AHA, and others, leading to over 50 publications and four US patents. Dr. Lounsbury is dedicated to teaching and mentorship and has earned the role of Distinguished Educator in the Teaching Academy. In teaching, she helped to develop and serves as a course director for the advanced undergraduate courses “Pharmacology and Therapeutics” and “Medical Cannabis” that contribute to the pre-health professions undergraduate and accelerated master’s programs. She assisted in creating and serves as the Director for the Master of Medical Science degree program, which serves as a pre-health professions academic enhancing program. She embraces the evolution of medical student education and accepted leadership roles to assist in the development of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum, which integrates content and utilizes active learning pedagogy. As Assistant Dean, she focuses on continuous quality improvement for the foundational medical curriculum, with a focus on teaching of pharmacology and medical biochemistry, integrating social medicine themes, and reducing bias in curriculum materials. Outside of work, she enjoys outdoor adventures with her family and friendly competitive sports.
