First-year medical students from the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont offered high school students from across the state unique mentorship opportunities and insight into what a future in the health care field might look like at two sessions of the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont Summer Institutes on health and medicine.
The sessions, held July 6–12 at the Vermont State University (VTSU) Lyndon campus and July 13–19 at VTSU–Castleton, were hosted in partnership with, respectively, the Northern and Southern Vermont Area Health Education Centers (AHEC). These annual intensive summer residencies allow high school students to experience a variety of health and medical careers and earn certifications by learning hands-on skills with the guidance of practicing professionals.
“This partnership brings the health careers exploration curriculum that is unique to AHEC, and it pairs with GIV’s community building and youth development expertise,” Southern Vermont AHEC Executive Director Jennifer Scott, Psy.D., said. “All curriculum has a clinical component to it, so students get to learn new skills and then practice them.”
