As we work towards becoming an anti-racist museum, gathering ideas and responding to them are central to our efforts. These are some of the questions that we are thinking about. 1 Start 2 Complete What does an anti-racist museum look like to you? What kinds of programs and exhibitions does an anti-racist museum organize in order to support and amplify BIPOC artists, organizers, and thinkers? Who should the Fleming Museum seek to collaborate with in order to create more responsive, inclusive exhibitions, programs, and spaces? What kinds of artwork do you want to see in the Fleming Museum? We want to reimagine our galleries, so they aren’t reinforcing colonialist geographical frameworks by separating paintings and ethnographic collections. What do you imagine in these spaces? What kinds of programs, performances, and events do you want to attend that encourage a variety of perspectives on and responses to these artworks? What kinds of perspectives matter to you as you interpret a work of art: personal stories, historical context, perspectives from makers, how it was collected, creative responses by multiple people? What do you want to know about the histories of how the Fleming acquired and studied its ethnographic collections—including the histories of how these objects were used in the Vermont Eugenics Survey and in teaching racist ideas of cultural hierarchy? How can the Fleming take care to value the personal responses and interpretations we’re asking visitors to share as we become more inclusive, participatory, and responsive? What questions are you thinking about? What do these questions spark for you? Do further questions or ideas come to mind?
