Timber harvest was measured by collecting data on the volume of timber harvested from forests in the state each year. A larger total harvest indicates the forest was able to provide more resources, ultimately contributing to the economy. Vermont's forest-based manufacturing and recreation sectors contribute $1.5 billion to the economy and support 10,000 full-time jobs1.  The viability of the timber industry can contribute to keeping larger tracts of land forested. Here, we assess the volume of timber extracted from Vermont’s forests in cords, as reported by mills and foresters in annual surveys. A high score means that the forest is producing high volumes of timber.

----------

The score is calculated using a target value and the historical range of the the entire long-term dataset. The higher the score, the closer this year's value is to the target.

Once the score is computed for each year, the trend in scores over time is calculated. If the trend is significantly positive or negative, the long-term trend is marked as increasing or decreasing respectively.

Component Description
Scored as

Category 1 (direction matters) - higher is better. Scored on where this year's value falls within the full historical range observed for this indicator; higher values score higher.

Target value

Not applicable - this indicator is not scored against a target value.

Directionality of scores

Higher values score higher. The score is a direct (monotonic) function of the value.

Minimum value used in scoring

Lowest observed value in the record, padded downward by 10% of the observed range (not below zero).

Maximum value used in scoring

Highest observed value in the record, padded upward by 10% of the observed range.

The Annual Variability badge shows whether this indicator's measured values move smoothly or jump from year to year. It compares the typical squared change between consecutive years (the mean successive squared difference, MSSD) against the variation of the whole record, computed from the raw data, not the score.

Low, Medium, and High are fixed thresholds shared by every indicator. A ratio below 1 reads Low: changes between years are small relative to the record's overall variation, the signature of a smooth or steadily trending series. A ratio near 2 is what random year-to-year scatter produces. Above 2 reads High: the series see-saws, reversing direction faster than chance would. Because the ratio is unit-free, the badge is comparable across indicators with very different units. It describes year-to-year behavior and does not affect the score; indicators with short records show no badge.

Timber Harvest uses the annual quantity of timber harvested in Vermont reported in the Vermont Forest Resource Harvest Report, expressed in cords of wood. The indicator represents the production of a major forest commodity and is updated when the state harvest summary is released.

Timber Harvest is a directional higher-is-better indicator. V5.0 scores the annual value across the full padded observed range and corrected the historical minimum-tracking logic used in this family. The harvest total is an administrative total rather than a statistical sample, so no uncertainty band is shown.
