The total yearly production of maple syrup provides a sense of the health and economic value of the state's sugarbushes. Vermont's maple industry contributes over $300 million in total sales to the state's economy each year1, yet it is heavily dependent on favorable climate conditions and the health of sugar maple trees. Here, we assessed the condition of the maple syrup industry as the yearly value of the total maple syrup production in Vermont. A high score means that total maple syrup revenue is high.

----------

The score is calculated using a target value and the historical range of the the entire long-term dataset. The higher the score, the closer this year's value is to the target.

Once the score is computed for each year, the trend in scores over time is calculated. If the trend is significantly positive or negative, the long-term trend is marked as increasing or decreasing respectively.

Component Description
Scored as

Category 1 (direction matters) - higher is better. Scored on where this year's value falls within the full historical range observed for this indicator; higher values score higher.

Target value

Not applicable - this indicator is not scored against a target value.

Directionality of scores

Higher values score higher. The score is a direct (monotonic) function of the value.

Minimum value used in scoring

Lowest observed value in the record, padded downward by 10% of the observed range (not below zero).

Maximum value used in scoring

Highest observed value in the record, padded upward by 10% of the observed range.

The Annual Variability badge shows whether this indicator's measured values move smoothly or jump from year to year. It compares the typical squared change between consecutive years (the mean successive squared difference, MSSD) against the variation of the whole record, computed from the raw data, not the score.

Low, Medium, and High are fixed thresholds shared by every indicator. A ratio below 1 reads Low: changes between years are small relative to the record's overall variation, the signature of a smooth or steadily trending series. A ratio near 2 is what random year-to-year scatter produces. Above 2 reads High: the series see-saws, reversing direction faster than chance would. Because the ratio is unit-free, the badge is comparable across indicators with very different units. It describes year-to-year behavior and does not affect the score; indicators with short records show no badge.

The Dashboard uses total annual maple syrup revenue reported by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The series represents an economic forest product service and is updated when the annual NASS values become available.

Maple Syrup Production is scored as a directional higher-is-better indicator using the full padded observed range. V5.0 corrected the minimum-tracking logic so the true observed minimum is used rather than an implicit zero, allowing the annual scores to span the intended 1-to-5 scale. The source series does not provide a coefficient of variation suitable for the Dashboard, so no uncertainty band is shown.
