Project Overview

This study serves as a proof of concept for the viability of pole mounted Structure from Motion (SfM) as a tool for monitoring stream channel morphology and change. We surveyed 2 sites, the Warner Creek site, northeast of Phoenicia, NY, which underwent a restoration project in 2021, and the East Kill landslide site, southeast of Jewett, NY. Surveys were conducted using consumer grade action cameras mounted on 5 m poles. Constructed 3D point clouds were compared to each other, publicly available lidar (light detection and ranging) and DEM (digital elevation model) data available from NYS ITS Geospatial Services, as well as a preexisting drone based survey of the Warner Creek site, conducted for NYC DEP courtesy of SLR Consulting.

Objectives

The primary goal going into this Catskill Research Fellowship was to test the viability of pole mounted SfM for monitoring morphological changes of stream channels at established and potential Stream Sediment Turbidity Reduction Projects (STRPs) in the region, as a viable alternative and/or supplement to the more expensive UAS based surveys.
