Project Overview
In 2019, a study was conducted in the Catskills Nature Preserve which found evidence that registers within the park are not providing an accurate count of how many people are using the trails. This study also found a positive correlation between an individual’s view of the risk to their personal safety and their willingness to sign in at a trailhead. Using a mix of surveying and observations, this study planned to confirm the findings from the 2019 study, test hikers’ risk assessment, and find ways in which sign-in rates can be improved.
Objectives
1. to validate and confirm previously-identified sign-in rates for Catskill Park trailheads (Borovy & Kuehn, 2020); 2. to prioritize trailhead management and monitoring needs according to estimated visitor numbers, and trail users’ perceptions of visitor numbers, trail difficulty, and safety/risk involved in using the trail 3. to obtain input from visitors about potential educational sign messages and facility modifications at trailheads that might encourage registry sign-in.
