Juan Alvez Ph.D., the UVM Extension Center for Sustainable Agriculture's Pasture Program Technical Coordinator, is offering a hands-on course for University of Vermont undergraduates this fall. Restoring Ecosystem Services Across Landscapes (NR 285) is a transdisciplinary problem-solving course to empower students to address degraded ecosystems by understanding ecological concepts and exploring several methods to ease human impact
Healthy ecosystems provide essential benefits and economic prosperity to society. In the last century, modernization and the consolidation of farms into agro-industries has put emphasis on increasing the production of goods, trading away benefits not always easy to understand or quantify in monetary units. As we pass the 7.2 billion-population mark, most ecosystems have been replaced by agriculture and managed for the production of food, fiber and fuel. Students enrolled in this class will help design and report solutions to assure human and ecological health.
