As a double major in economics and land use and resource conflict studies, Forward worked to find an area of interest in which he could apply what he had learned during his time at UVM. “I worked in the UVM Spatial Analysis Lab as a data technician all during school and took every opportunity I could find to engage in applied research with UVM faculty related to my field of study,” Evan recalls, continuing on to his explain how the connections he fostered and the experience he gained during this time allowed him to be selected for a prestigious Fulbright fellowship in Vietnam. While abroad, Forward used what he learned during his undergraduate experience to focus on Integrated Water Resource Management methodologies in the Mekong River Basin. Since the completion of both his time at UVM and his fellowship, Evan has had the ability to experience many different companies and roles. “First I was in the global development field, then renewable energy technology, and then in 2019 I moved into insurance.” Forward, the current Director of Business Development at New England Excess Exchange, explained he was interested in pursuing a career path that had no ceiling to what he could become professionally. Furthermore, with recent developments in the use of artificial intelligence (AI), Evan wanted to join an industry that, “stood to benefit substantially from advancements in AI and data analytics,” which led him to the field of Property & Casualty insurance. This field also fit Evan’s goals as they pertain to economics. “I was interested in finding a career in an industry that… would not require me to necessarily choose up front which area of the economy I could participate in and have an impact on.”

Forward’s experience suggests the field of insurance is one students of economics are especially apt for. He recommends any students interested in pursuing a career in this industry get involved. “Become a member of an association of International Association of Insurance Professionals (IAIP),” Evan explains, continuing on to say UVM students in particular should also, “get involved with one of Vermont’s IAIP chapters such as the Champlain Valley Association of Insurance Professionals (CVAIP) and Vermont Association of Insurance Professionals (VTAIP).”

Professionals in the insurance industry will be hosting a panel on Wednesday, March 6th, to answer any questions interested students may have on internship and career opportunities in the field. Please stay tuned for more information regarding this event.
