The CUPS Office has just announced the awarding of the Outstanding New Service-Learning Faculty Award to Geography Professor and Food Systems faculty member and instructor, Cherie Morse and Zac Ispa-Landa (RSENR).
Cherie Morse has been teaching service-learning for several years in courses in Geography (GEOG 192 Vermont Field Studies) and Food Systems (FS 350 Food Systems Application Seminar). From the beginning, her courses have exemplified the best practices in service-learning: attention to the needs of the community partner, the delivery of a high-quality product, and critical reflection underlying the entire process. Cherie is a flexible and responsive instructor who ensures students have qualitative research skills students to produce stellar reports, exhibits and products. At the same time, students are asked to interrogate their own experiences and positionality; CUPS reviewers were particularly impressed with the co-authored publication emerging from one service-learning seminar, which explores the power relations in field sites and “experts” offices.
