Staff of the Biomedical Statistics Research Core provide a diverse set of services in collaboration with University researchers.

Problem specification

  • Formulate hypotheses to be tested and their order of importance
  • Review literature related to hypotheses to estimate effect sizes
  • Synthesize results across previous studies (meta-analyses)

Study design and methodology

  • Select appropriate study design (e.g., randomized, cross-sectional, longitudinal, case-control, etc.)
  • Calculate appropriate sample sizes and conduct power calculations
  • Specify method of experimental assignment
  • Specify statistical analysis plans
  • Assist with the preparation of grant and contract proposals, study protocols, and/or standard operating procedures

Data collection, processing, and monitoring

  • Develop standardized operating procedures for data collection and study monitoring
  • Use UVM’s Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) software to develop, implement, and monitor data collection systems
  • Build Access databases and Excel workbooks
  • Develop phone-based Interaction Voice Recognition (IVR) systems for random assignment of study participants
  • Conduct interim analyses to contribute to reports for Data Safety Monitoring Boards (DSMBs)

Statistical analysis

  • Analyze data using a wide variety of statistical software, including SAS, Stata, SPSS, and R, among others
  • Prepare tables and charts summarizing results
  • Provide interpretation of study results

Authorship

  • Develop manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Prepare reports and other dissemination materials
