Class Absence Due to Hospitalization, Severe Illness, or Injury
Students should communicate directly with their instructors as soon as possible regarding absences and coursework. Instructors have the final authority to excuse absences. The Dean's Office can assist by contacting instructors on behalf of students, with explicit permission.
- Dean's Support: To request assistance, email health@uvm.edu to authorize CHWB to notify your Dean’s Office. The Dean’s Office will then inform faculty. No health information will be shared without the student's consent.
- Academic Progress: Depending on your condition, discuss with faculty how to continue coursework during your recovery.
- Long-Term Medical Absences: Must go through the short-term medical accommodation process outlined below.
Class Absence Due to Short-Term Illness (e.g., COVID-19, RSV, Flu)
For acute illnesses lasting 1-5 days, notify your instructors directly about your situation. Faculty have the final authority to excuse absences.
- Dean's Note: If required by faculty, complete the short-term acute illness form, and the Dean’s Office will notify your instructors.
- Academic Progress: Discuss plans with your instructors for maintaining coursework based on your condition.
Short-Term Mobility Support
For temporary mobility issues not covered under ADA, the following resources are available:
- Parking: Accessible transportation is available via the UVM Campus Area Transportation System. For temporary parking permits, submit a request (PDF) through SHS, which will recommend accommodations to UVM Transportation and Parking Services.
- Housing: Contact SHS (health@uvm.edu) for short-term housing modifications. Recommendations will be shared with Residential Life and implemented as appropriate.
- Dining: Use the Sick Meal Plan Access Authorization to have someone pick up meals for you from dining halls.
Pregnancy and Temporary ADA Accommodations
Temporary accommodations for pregnancy or other ADA-eligible conditions are available.
Temporary Disability Accommodations
To receive accommodations for a temporary disability not addressed by Student Health Services, students should submit information to SAS that includes:
- The disability, its impact, and the estimated duration.
- Any side effects from medication and recommended accommodations.
The information must be recent enough to reflect the current impact. Additional documentation may be requested if needed to assess the ongoing need for accommodations.
- Initial Request: Students can complete the process by filling out the Getting Started Form, which allows them to describe the impact of the temporary disability and the requested accommodations.
- Appointment: Schedule a meeting with your assigned SAS specialist to review submitted information, identify accommodations, and discuss additional resource options. The specialist will advise if further documentation is needed.
- Temporary Letters of Accommodation: Issued on a semester-by-semester basis, based on the student's needs and available information.
