All About Provisional Accommodations

The Purpose of Provisional Accommodations

Body

Provisional accommodations are intended to provide short-term support while the student gathers necessary documentation. This approach ensures timely access and upholds the university’s commitment to equity and inclusion, particularly when immediate barriers may otherwise prevent access.

Eligibility for Provisional Accommodations

Body

Students may be eligible for provisional accommodations if:

  • They have completed an intake meeting with a SAS Specialist.
  • They have articulated a clear narrative of their access needs based on the ADA definition of a disability; and
  • They have indicated intent to submit disability documentation.

Durations & Conditions

Body
  • Provisional accommodations may be provided for up to one semester from the initial meeting with SAS.
  • Students will receive written notice of their provisional status, the documentation deadline, and a summary of next steps.
  • A reminder will be sent if documentation has not been received.
  • If documentation is not received by the end of the semester and no extension is requested, the student’s provisional status will be deactivated, an email to the student will be sent, and accommodation will be discontinued.
  • Extensions may be granted at the discretion of SAS for extenuating circumstances (e.g., provider delays, transfer of records, etc.).

Limitations

Body

Provisional accommodations:

  • Are temporary and conditional.
  • Are not guaranteed to be approved as ongoing accommodations once documentation is reviewed.
  • Will not be retroactively applied if later documentation does not support the requested accommodations.

SAS reserves the right to modify or rescind provisional accommodations at any time based on emerging information or institutional needs.
