Recently,
Staff Council President Steve Lunna
informed the Staff Council Executive Board
that he will be resigning at the end of
the month. The Board met to discuss which
of two options available to them, per the
bylaws: to hold special elections, or to
appoint leadership. They voted to appoint
Caleb Gilbert, currently the Staff Council
Vice President, as President of Staff
Council, and to appoint Laura Clayton as
Vice President - this is according to the
bylaws which state that a Vice Presidency
vacancy can immediately be filled by the
Executive Board member with the longest
tenure at UVM.
Below you'll find a farewell note from
Steve and refresher/introductions to Caleb
and Laura. |

Dear
Staff,
I am writing to inform you that effective
September 30, 2020 I will resign as the
President of Staff Council.
Unfortunately, juggling the vital duties
of both this position and my work serving
veterans has become unfeasible. It has
been an honor and a privilege to serve as
President of Staff Council for the past 27
months.
I grappled with this decision for weeks
before I made it; it was an especially
difficult step to take, considering all of
the current issues we’re facing as
non-represented staff at UVM. But I know
that incoming Staff Council leadership
will continue to embody an open, honest,
and collaborative spirit in their
relations with UVM administration, their
advocacy for staff and their dealings with
each of you.
I wish you all the very best and hope you
continue to be the driving force behind
change at our University and in our
communities.
~ Steve Lunna |

The impact of
COVID-19 on Black, Indigenous, and
People of Color (BIPOC) continues to be
much greater than on other groups.
Becoming familiar with the complex reasons
behind this fact is essential if we want
to work towards a better future and move
away from this grave inequity.
This week, consider penciling in one of
the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's
upcoming offerings to your calendar:

- Monuments
That Erase History
Wednesday, November 4, 5:30-7:00 PM
Member: $15, Non-Member: $25
Examine the history of these
monuments–the Confederate ones around
the south, the ones in the U.S.
Capital Building, the monuments in
California of Junípero Serra, as well
as ones in Europe, one of which is
considered a master work by a major
Baroque sculptor. Explore why they
were made, what the messages were that
they sent and why, and then the issues
of keeping them in their original
sites. Discover how monuments do not
contain history and instead contain
mythologies propagated by a particular
group, in a particular moment, for a
particular reason. Register
