Graduate Programs in English

Welcome to the University of Vermont Department of English Graduate Program Page.  The University of Vermont, the nation's oldest land grant university, has long been recognized as a leading research institution, and its tradition of graduate study in English extends back more than a century.  Combining a large research faculty with small classes and seminars, the M.A. program features student-oriented instruction and exceptional attention to professional development.  The Department's diverse, productive, and vibrant faculty offers opportunities for study of the English language and its literatures, both in traditional fields as well as in critical theory, film and television, and world and post colonial literatures.  Students who have successfully completed their M.A. in English have gone on to a wide variety of callings.  Our recent graduates have been accepted to excellent Ph.D. programs throughout the country, such as Cornell, CUNY, Harvard, University of Colorado, and the University of  Illinois. Others find the program indispensable for upgrading their credentials and opening new opportunities for career advancement; the analytical thinking and effective communications skills developed through an M.A. in English have helped these M.A. graduates to create careers in teaching, writing, journalism, research, law, business, and administration.

We invite you to explore the Graduate Program's web site to learn about our offerings and to meet our faculty members. If you have any questions about the program and its requirements, please contact the director of graduate studies, Professor Todd McGowan .
