Sheila Boland Chira joined the faculty at UVM in 1999. She teaches courses in American literary history, race and ethnicity in literary studies, and composition. She is particularly interested in nineteenth-century American literature and the role of the history of the concept of race in the American literary imagination. Sheila's passions for the rigors and rewards of writing instruction dates from her days teaching in New York University's acclaimed Expository Writing Program, where the compelling student essay was the coin of the realm.
Courses Taught: American Literature, Expository Writing, Race and Ethnic Literary Studies, Written Expression
