Greeting: Karmen Swim
President of the Staff Council
Good morning graduates, families and friends!
As President of the Staff Council, it is my pleasure to address you today on behalf of more than 2,000 staff members who work at the University of Vermont.
It has been a pleasure for all of us to watch your progress over the last four years. Every student I have met has been on their own journey. Your journeys began when you were nervous first-year students, moving in, making friends, and learning the ropes. And your respective/individual paths have carried you all the way through to today - to becoming the accomplished, confident young adults sitting in front of me.
For me, this is an especially exciting day as I am not only one of your commencement speakers, but the mom of a graduate. My daughter, is graduating from the Grossman School of Business. I have been thrilled to be a part of her journey. I am so proud of you, Amanda…every day!
But for her - and for all of you - this day is not the end of this journey, but only a celebratory waypoint as you move forward into life beyond the University. Like your time here, your futures will take many different shapes and courses with many more opportunities for celebration. Whatever path you choose to follow, your roots will always connect you here.
All of the University’s staff have worked hard to make a difference for you, the students. You may not always have noticed us, but we’ve kept your dorms warm and clean and kept the internet on, we’ve served you meals and checked out library books for you, we’ve helped you figure out what courses to take and helped you review your resumes. We’ve served as your supervisors for work study jobs, delivered your mail, and printed your transcripts. It has been a joy to all of us to watch you evolve.
As you leave here today, please know that we will miss you, but we hope you stay forever connected to the University and to Burlington. We are proud to have been a small part of your journey and we wish you continued success in your life ahead.
Congratulations, Class of 2017!
