| the past (il passato remoto)
This is a highly irregular verb that is furthermore rarely used in conversations in some regions of Italy. It is regularly used in literature, the press, and much formal writing, as well as in conversation in Tuscany and most of Southern Italy. So, although you can get away without using it, you certainly need to be able to recognize it and understand it. Its meaning and its difference from the imperfetto are roughly equivalent to the passato prossimo.
