Joshua Bongard featured in IEEE Computer

An article in the April 2009 IEEE Computer magazine entitled, "Biologically Inspired Computing," features Dr. Joshua Bongard's robotics research in artificial intelligence (AI). This inaugural article is the first of a new column to focus on the latest research in AI, including classical topics, interfaces with other disciplines, and applications in novel domains.

Dr. Bongard, assistant professor of computer science in UVM's College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS), is known nationally and internationally. He has received a prestigious and highly competitive New Faculty Fellowship from Microsoft Research for his robotics research with self-healing robots. Only five such awards are given nationwide. He has also received recognition from MIT as one of the world's top innovators under 35 and earned an appointment to a National Academy of Engineering symposium to discuss 21st-century frontiers in research.

"We are extremely fortunate to have one of the world's rising stars, Dr. Bongard, in AI and complex systems on our faculty." says CEMS Dean Domenico Grasso. "His seminal and innovative research reflects the work of so many of our talented faculty."

Dr. Bongard's areas of expertise are evolutionary robotics, evolutionary computation, and physical simulation. "Evolutionary algorithms and robotics are just in their infancy," Bongard says. "They have many obstacles to overcome." But Dr. Bongard believes evolutionary algorithms and robotics hold great promise as integrated design and modeling tools. Such applications are also useful in domains other than robotics, such as complex systems.
