Students take engineering challenge

Here's the thing about the beach sand at Sand Bar State Park: It's not ideal for building arches. It's apparently not strictly indigenous, either, but that's another matter.

[...]The challenge was this: design and build an arch out of sand and water. Each entry would be scored based on a formula that accorded more points for broader, taller and thinner arches. About 30 four-person teams took on the task with varying degrees of industry and perseverance during what turned out to be a glorious day for relaxing or idle fun at the beach.

This good-natured competition came on the third day of the [UVM Engineering Institute], which draws international and American secondary school students for a week's worth of engineering activities and lectures.
