Dean Grasso to speak at IEEE Region 1 leadership workshop and Board of Governors meeting

SciencesDomenico Grasso, Dean of UVM's College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, will be the keynote speaker on "Holistic Engineering" during the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) Region 1 Leadership Workshop and Board of Governors Meeting at the Burlington Sheraton on Friday, August 10, at 2 pm. Grasso, an environmental engineer, will discuss the dawning of a new era for the engineering profession.

The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society. Through its 365,000 members in 160 countries, the society is a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.

Dedicated to the advancement of technology, the IEEE publishes 30 percent of the world's literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields, and has developed more than 900 active industry standards. The organization also sponsors or co-sponsors nearly 400 international technical conferences each year.

Region 1 encompasses the northeastern geographic region of the United States with 38,000 members.

The IEEE Leadership Workshop is Region 1's largest event of the year. Attendees include the 11-member executive committee, 17 other Region 1 board members, and invitees from the 22 sections, for a total of 110 IEEE volunteers. The workshop runs through Sunday, August 12.
