Howard Carpenter Our condolences to family, friends and colleagues of Howard J. Carpenter. Professor Carpenter served as an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences for 40 years, from 1947 until his retirement in 1987. His tenure included a year as Acting Department Chair, several years as Associate Dean for CEMS, and four years as Associate Dean for the CEMS Curricular Affairs Committee.

Professor Carpenter obtained his his B.S. in mechanical engineering from UVM in 1943 and his M.S. in mechanical engineering from UVM. He was a registered professional engineer in the State of Vermont. Prior to his teaching appointment at UVM, he worked for General Electric, Pratt and Whitney, Sylvania, and for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

He was admired most for the practical engineering knowledge he shared with students during classes and labs, as well as for work outside the classroom. His passion for engineering led him to focus on providing engineering education to middle and high school students. With Profs. Richard Foote and Stephen Titcomb, he created a hands-on engineering challenge for middle and high school students entitled, “The UVM Design “Technology and Science Connection (TASC) Competition”. This innovative program has been recognized nationally for its unique ability to draw students into the engineering disciplines. Now in its 20th year, UVM Design TASC continues to recognize students for their work designing, building, and testing devices designed to perform a specified task. Carpenter also served as program coordinator for the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS), an organization whose goal is to inspire students to explore, assess and experience engineering.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Williston Federated Church in Williston, VT.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked for donations to be made to a memorial fund at UVM established in Howard’s name. Please send contributions to: Howard J. Carpenter Memorial Fund, 411 Main Street, Burlington, VT 05405.
