Tribute to John O. Outwater, 1923-2009

Dr. John O. Outwater was Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) from 1956 to 1993 when he retired. He obtained his PhD from Cambridge University, England, in 1976, and received his BA from Cambridge University, England in 1943, an MA from Cambridge University in 1948, and a ScD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1950. He was a registered professional engineer in the State of Vermont and received many awards, including two notable awards in 1970 as Vermont Engineer of the Year and Outstanding Educator of America.
His research interests centered on ski safety and mechanisms of injury, slope design, tree mechanics with sap flow, composite materials, pultrusion, fracture mechanics test methods, and variation of elastic constants. His many papers were published in such journals as the Journal of Biomechanics and the Journal of Computational Materials, and included such titles as "On the Skiability of Snow," published in Skiing Trauma and Safety, and "The Engineering Problem of Ski Safety," published in the Journal of Biomechanics.
