Dr. Jianke Yang publishes new book, has another on the way, and receives AFOSR grant
Release Date: 03-02-2009
Dr. Jianke Yang, professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at UVM's College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS), has written a new textbook with coauthor Maksim Skorobogatiy entitled Fundamentals of Photonic Crystal Guiding. The textbook, which provides an in-depth introduction to the field of photonic crystals, has been published by Cambridge University Press.
"Publishing any book is a great accomplishment, but publishing with a prestigious press such as Cambridge is a true distinction," says CEMS Dean Domenico Grasso.
Dr. Yang has also received a three-year Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) grant of $365,000 for his research on nonlinear optics in optically-induced photonic lattices.
Yang's research focuses on nonlinear waves and their physical applications, including: optical pulses in fibers; light beams in crystals and air; and surface and internal waves in the ocean. This research has direct applications to oceanography, nonlinear optics and fiber telecommunications systems. In fact, using optical solutions as information bits in data transmission is revolutionizing the telecommunications industry.
In addition, Yang will be publishing a second book this summer with the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) entitled Nonlinear Waves from Integrable to Non-integrable Systems.
