25th Annual MathCounts Northwest Competition: Saturday, February 16

The UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) and the Vermont Society of Professional Engineers are sponsoring the 25th Annual MathCounts Competition for the Northwest Region of Vermont, on Saturday February 16, 2008 at UVM in Billings North Lounge (3rd floor). MathCounts is a nationwide program designed to recognize mathematical skills of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.
A total of 16 schools and approximately 150 students will compete in written and fast-paced oral matches, both as individuals and on teams, in subjects that include geometry, probability, statistics, algebra and polynomials.
The excitement culminates during the Countdown Round in Billings Theater from 11:45 - 12:45 pm where the top 12 students compete two-by-two to answer questions such as:
"James has a collection of 20 miniature cars and trucks. Cars make up 40% of the collection. If James adds only cars to his collection, how many cars must he add to make the collection 75% cars?" (Answer: 28 cars.)
Schools and students will receive awards from 1:30 - 2:00 pm in Billings North Lounge.
The top four Northwest Regional teams go on to compete in the statewide competition to be held Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, VT. The top four individuals from the state competition go on to compete in the National MathCounts competition on May 8-11, 2008 in Denver, Colorado.
