Businesses and Vermont towns benefit from UVM undergraduate research

CEMS School of Engineering: Design night

On Wednesday evening, teams of seniors from the School of Engineering at the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) will present their senior design projects, which address a variety of problems for Vermont towns and businesses.

Projects include testers that detect coffee bag leaks for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, human-powered portable beverage chillers, radio frequency identification information bracelets, as well as a number of projects addressing water issues, such as drinking water and stormwater in Chelsea, stormwater detention in Essex, and Greensboro Hydroelectric Project and Historic Arch Preservation.

These and many more interesting projects will be on exhibit April 25, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, in Votey 105, Kalkin 001 and Kalkin 003. Invited to attend are industrial and government partners, parents and spouses, UVM faculty, area high school students interested in engineering, and media.

"The event is an educational milestone for the engineering students," says Jeff Marshall, Director of the School of Engineering (SoE). "It represents a culmination of the engineering education experience in the context of a practical design problem." Mike Rosen, Coordinator of Design Education, adds that "it's remarkable what teams of UVM Engineering seniors can do when they combine four years of science and mathematics with creativity, practical knowledge, and a desire to meet real-world needs."
