Nested within the GreenHouse Residential Learning Community (GH-RLC), the LEAF (Landscape, Ecology, Agriculture, and Food) Program brings together 14 first-year students from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) to form an active learning community. The LEAF Program capitalizes on the diverse range of interests and disciplines included within CALS. It provides students the opportunity to collaborate with a small group of their peers, work across disciplines and integrate theory into practice. Also, as part of the GH-RLC, LEAF students will participate in all the activities that members of the larger community enjoy.

LEAF students will engage in a fall course with all new GH students (Ecology of Place, NR15) and a one-credit spring seminar, specifically designed for LEAF students (CALS 95). The spring seminar will explore a breadth of topics: global sustainability, health, food supply, sound agricultural practices renewable energy, animal and plant ecosystems, informed policy making, sustainable community planning as well as many other current issues that are key to the future of Vermont, the nation and the globe.

LEAF students will learn through field trips, workshops, hands-on experiences, independent studies, lectures and service projects. LEAF students are intended to be engaged, collaborative, and receptive to learning and living in an ecologically-minded community. The unique experience will leave students with greater respect for diverse disciplinary perspectives and understanding of their own fields of specialization as they relate to other disciplines.

If you see yourself as an active player in creating a sustainable future, cultivating and expanding your interests, and building leadership skills, you are encouraged to apply to be a member of the CALS-LEAF community.
