Galen's interests are spatial and dynamic computer modeling, computer algorithms, ecology, and policy. He is especially interested in solutions to environmental problems that actually work for communities. Galen is currently working on ecosystem service modeling funded by a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Galen has his B.A. in Government and Politics (1993) with an interest in international relations, economics and French and German languages. He also holds a B.S. in Computer Science (2003) from the University of Maryland, focusing mainly on algorithms. He has work experience in scientific computing in several research laboratories, including the University of Maryland, NASA, and University of Washington. He also has experience working in international and outdoor education, and speaks French and German.
