Mark Gately completed his undergraduate training at Cornell University, where he earned a BA in computer science with a specialization in economics. Upon graduation in 2000, Mark moved from Ithaca to Burlington, now his permanent home. In 2005, more than four years out of school, he decided to return to the classroom with the plan of applying his technical skills to the trans-disciplinary field of ecological economics. Mark is currently working towards a masters degree in Community Development and Applied Economics (CDAE). His research interests include energy issues, specifically the concepts of net energy and EROI (energy return on investment), as well as dynamic computer simulation modeling. He is also assisting in research at the Gund Institute, where he analyzes the dynamics of the world's ecosystem services through the use of spatially explicit global computer models. Out of the classroom, Mark works at Shelburne Farms, a non-profit environmental education center.
