Abstract: As China’s economy has developed rapidly and environmental problems have increasingly become bottlenecks restricting the sustainable development of the country. Since 1949, China has gradually established a series policies and legal systems in the field of pollution prevention, while, the policies related to conservation of ecosystems and natural resources are far from perfect. Particularly, the problem of equality among regions and different groups of people in the context of utilization and protection of natural resources has not fully considered in the practice and has not reflected in the policies. In order to meet the urgent needs for decision making, a series of programs was initiated by government. Among others, the project on “Policies and Mechanism on eco-compensation of China was organized by CCICED(China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development) jointly implemented by a group Chinese and international experts. This paper intended to provide a brief summary about the preliminary findings of the research. These include the concept and theory of the eco-compensation, necessity and methods of its studies. A series of case studies including eco-compensation in mining, watershed management, forestry and nature reserves was presented; At the last, a number of recommendations drawn from the research was given to the government for future implementation.
