in China and the U.S.
October 13 - 17, 2008
Beijing, China
Beijing, China
Overview
Our goal is to focus attention on China and the USA, two nations that are very important on the world stage economically, demographically, and environmentally, and examine our current state of understanding of the complex dynamics that maintain ecosystem services and human well-being. This conference will bring together American and Chinese researchers to examine some of the similarities and differences among these two countries and how the study of ecosystem services might benefit from increased collaboration. The valuation of ecosystem services, for instance, is a particularly intriguing research challenge given the distinct histories, cultures, governance, and economies of the two countries.
This one-week conference/workshop will cover the following issues:
- Review the most up-to-date and comprehensive ecosystem services research and applications;
- Identify country-specific factors important in ecosystem services research and application, e.g. public attitude towards environment and institutional set-up;
- Evaluate existing approaches and establish a protocol for ecosystem service research and application in China;
- Produce a set of journal articles on ecosystem services in the US and China;
- Set an agenda for future research and collaboration.
