Sarah van Gelder is a co-founder and board member of the Positive Futures Network and executive editor of its flagship journal, YES! A Journal of Positive Futures. The journal and the network support people's active engagement in creating a more just, compassionate, and sustainable future. As part of that work, Sarah has written, spoken, and edited issues on such themes as voluntary simplicity, ecological business, futures studies, community-based economics, sexuality, education, conflict resolution, and sustainable communities. In all cases, she takes a whole-systems approach to identifying strategic opportunities for change and empowering action. Her speaking engagements have included keynote speeches at the first annual Women and Sustainable Technologies conference in Tucson and at a New York City conference on alternative to consumerism, and a panel convener and speaker at The Other Economic Summit held in conjunction with the G7 summit in Denver. Sarah previously edited and wrote for In Context, which covered themes similar to those covered in YES! During her tenure, In Context was awarded the 1994 Alternative Press Award for best coverage of emerging issues. Sarah has also edited an energy and environmental policy weekly, and produced television and radio programs, including a series on community empowerment that won a national award. She has worked as a tenant organizer in Portland, Oregon, helped found a cooperative produce wholesaler to link Portland-area food coops and regional organic farmers, taught English, and edited news programs in Beijing, China. Sarah has lived in the Pacific Northwest for 20 years and has also lived in India, China, and Central America. She helped found the Winslow Cohousing, one of the first cohousing communities in the US.
