Sarah Karpanty, Co-Director and Secretary, AIZA BIBY
Karpanty earned a B.S. in Zoology from Miami University and is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at SUNY Stony Brook. She is currently a STAR Fellow of the Environmental Protection Agency, a Predoctoral Fellow of the National Science Foundation, and a Research Fellow of the Wildlife Conservation Society. Karpantys lifelong interest in birds and conservation biology has led her to conduct over 12 years of volunteer animal rehabilitation and childrens education at nature centers on Long Island and in Ohio. These volunteer experiences have provided her with the experience to identify strengths and weaknesses in other conservation organizations and to design Aiza Biby to reflect these observations. Karpanty has spent over one year conducting field research on raptors and lemurs in southern, western, and eastern Madagascar. She is well-accustomed to the rigors and politics of tropical conservation projects and has an excellent relationship with the Malagasy people. Karpanty is one of the five founding trustees of Aiza Biby and will be serving as the Co-Executive Director of Aiza Biby and as the Madagascar Coordinator for all Aiza Biby Programs.
