Rachel Schattman is a PhD student working on research related to climate change and farming practices in the northeastern United States. Rachel completed her BA at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY, and since that time has lived and worked around the country and internationally. She came to the University of Vermont for her MS in natural resources in 2007, where she completed a thesis on sustainability indicators for the Vermont-regional food system. Until beginning her doctoral work, she served as the local food program coordinator at UVM Extension's Center for Sustainable Agriculture. Her professional interests and expertise includes domestic food security, local scale agriculture and market development, community outreach and education, and qualitative research methods. She owns and operates Bella Farm, LLC, a certified organic vegetable farm located in Monkton, Vermont.

Research Interests: Agroecology, Food Systems
Dissertation: (1) Vermont Agricultural Resilience in the face of Climate Change: Risk management strategies used by Vermont farmers. (2) Spotted wing drosophila (SWD) and organic management strategies on Vermont berry farms: A study on exclusion netting.
