While at OSU, he spent one summer learning Spanish and Latin American history and culture in Mexico, and another as a volunteer for the BLM on the Upper Missouri River in Montana. Following graduation, Matt spent three years with a small educational field studies non-profit based in Ohio and the Bahamas. In 2000, he completed a Masters in environmental education at the University of New Mexico. He then spent several years learning various skills of sustainable living, including green home building, organic farming, and permaculture. He and his wife have operated a small farm in Vermont since 2006.
