While at OSU, he spent one summer learning Spanish and Latin American history and culture in Mexico, and another as a volunteer for the BLM on the Upper Missouri River in Montana. Following graduation, Matt spent three years with a small educational field studies non-profit based in Ohio and the Bahamas. In 2000, he completed a Masters in environmental education at the University of New Mexico. He then spent several years learning various skills of sustainable living, including green home building, organic farming, and permaculture. He and his wife have operated a small farm in Vermont since 2006. In the years since, Matt has been inspired to become an advocate and organizer for issues related to environmental health and community well-being, interests that inform his focus within the Master of Public Administration program and the Gund Institute.
