Rutland Pool Party Planned For Military Families

Rutland--A free end-of-summer pool party is planned for military families and their guests Aug. 23 in Rutland.

The event, which features swimming, games, dinner and back-to-school themed raffles, will be held at White Pool, 39 East Center St., from 6 to 8 p.m. Host for the event is the Rutland Regional Team of Operation: Military Kids (OMK), a University of Vermont Extension 4-H program.

Reservations are requested by Aug. 20. To register, call Heather at (802) 345-8190. Anyone needing a disability-related accommodation to participate should contact Stephanie Atwood, OMK coordinator, at (802) 656-0346 by Aug. 12.

All military kids who sign up by the deadline will receive a Hero Pack, designed to help them stay connected with their deployed parent. These backpacks are filled by non-military youths and community groups with items such as a disposable camera, photo album, journal and pen plus fun items such as a stuffed animal or stickers and a written note of appreciation.

Although the focus will be on fun, the event also provides an opportunity for military families to meet other families as well as learn more about the resources, services and youth programs available to them through community organizations that support OMK's efforts.

Vermont OMK is a statewide collaborative effort that brings together community partners to provide programs, camps and activities for military kids to teach leadership, citizenship and life skills. For more information, visit
