Farm Transfer Workshop Planned for March 13 in Rutland

Rutland--Estate and generational planning for farmers has become more difficult than ever with changes in estate laws and volatile financial markets. While older farmers are asking what steps they need to take for retirement, including transferring the farm to the next generation, that younger generation, while very optimistic, questions how they can enter into farming.

To help answer these questions, University of Vermont (UVM) Extension and the Rutland Area Farm and Food Link, are holding a workshop for farm families focusing on issues related to farm transfers, including estate planning, retirement, distribution of assets and choosing the right business structure. It's scheduled for March 13 at the South Station Restaurant, 170 South Main St. (Route 7), Rutland, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Farmers will hear from Jonathan Bump, an experienced agricultural attorney from Brattleboro, who will discuss wills and other legal aspects, and Bob Parsons, UVM Extension agricultural business management specialist, on succession planning. They also will learn more about conservation easements and how to help a new farmer get started while meeting their own family's goals. A panel of Vermont farmers will explain how they developed a plan for their farm to secure farm business and/or farmland succession.
