Farmers to Meet to Strategize About Rising Grain and Corn Prices

St. Albans--As grain and corn prices continue to increase, many farmers are asking what they can do to produce better quality forages and manage their feeding programs more efficiently. On March 12 University of Vermont (UVM) Extension will help them explore different strategies with the help of experts from Vermont and across the country.
The UVM Extension Northwest Crops and Soils Team is hosting the program, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the American Legion Hall in St. Albans. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. The fee, due by March 5, is $20 per person and includes lunch.
Dr. Greg Roth, a Pennsylvania State University agronomist, will share information on Penn State's work on interseeding cover crops in corn, including its new cover crop interseeder, and the potential economic and environmental benefits of cover cropping. Roth also will discuss corn silage management, reviewing trends for the past five years and practices for farmers to consider this year.
Talks by University of Wisconsin dairy nutritionist Dr. Randy Shaver will focus on strategies for dealing with high corn prices. His morning presentation will highlight the latest research on growing and feeding snaplage, shredlage and high-moisture corn. Following lunch he will explain how to balance carbohydrate sources for dairy cows when corn prices are high.
Farmers also will hear from Shawn Bossard, farm manager at Morrisville State College in Morrisville, N.Y. Bossard will discuss manure management, cover crops, soil aeration, vertical tillage and other ways to alleviate and reduce soil compaction on fields and pastures.
UVM Extension agronomists Dr. Sid Bosworth and Dr. Heather Darby will present the results of their various research trials. Bosworth will talk about yield and quality of perennial grass species including orchard grass and newer species, such as festiolium. Darby's talk will feature the latest research on triticale, wheat and barley for spring-harvested forage and recommendations for growing winter small grains for feed.
