Learn How You Can Support Local Military Families
- By Jahnine Spaulding
Newport--Northeast Kingdom residents are invited to an informational session, Nov. 13 in Newport, to learn how they can help support military families during the often stressful reintegration period after deployment.
University of Vermont Extension's Operation: Military Kids (OMK) will hold a Ready, Set, Go! training from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Goodrich Memorial Library, 202 Main St. The focus will be on ways residents can become involved either as volunteers for one-time events or as part of a community team to support local military families.
Jahnine Spaulding, OMK AmeriCorps VISTA member, will talk about the various phases of the deployment, especially reintegration, and its impact on local military kids and families. She also will describe programs OMK offers including school vacation camps, hero packs and the Mobile Technology Lab and ways to volunteer to become part of a community support network.
Contact Spaulding at (802) 656-2073 by Nov. 12 to register. If requiring a disability-related accommodation to participate, please call by Nov. 8.
Vermont OMK is a statewide collaborative effort that brings together community partners to provide programs, camps and activities for military kids to teach leadership, citizenship and life skills. For more information visit www.operationmilitarykids.org or www.facebook.com/OMKVermont.
