Inline Grading in the Assignment Tool

Instructors and students will now see uploaded assignments (within the Assignment Tool) displayed directly in the browser. Previously, uploaded assignment files had to be downloaded from the Grade Center to be opened. Now, when viewing a document submitted with the Assignment Tool, that document is converted to a format that is viewable inside the web browser. Supported document types that can be converted are Word (DOC, DOCX), PowerPoint (PPT, PPTX), Excel (XLS, XLSX), and PDF (PDF).

Annotations and Comments

Annotations, such as highlighting, circling, or text, can be made directly on the document from within Blackboard. More information on using annotations can be found in the guide for Inline Grading. If annotations have been made, there is an option to download a PDF version that includes the annotations or download the copy in the original format. This feature is also available to students when they view their submission.

Comments can be made on the side of the document by clicking the comment button.

Note: While all original uploaded assignment files are stored on UVM's Blackboard server, after the annotations, the converted document being displayed in the browser is stored on systems belonging to blackboard.com and their associates.

Browser inconsistencies: We've received reports from some students that they cannot see their instructor's annotations. This has been solved by asking them to try a different browser (Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari). You can also share the following link with your students to walk them through the steps of viewing their comments: follow these steps to view annotations Please contact blackboard@uvm.edu and include browser and operating system versions if you have students reporting missing annotations.
