My concept of art had gradually been formed into a stressful thing. I thought everything I drew had to be perfect—look just like the object I was drawing. This meant I had to use pencil because I would of course have hundreds of mistakes. But “real” art wasn’t done in pencil—it was done with paint. Right? Right?! Nope, once again I was wrong. One look at Todd’s site and I knew how to make art fun for me again.

I sat down that very night and tried to re-create a few of my favorite pieces by Todd. I did it with permanent ink on cardstock. PERMENANT INK! It was so much fun. Eventually I stopped looking at Todd’s work and just drew. Yup, just drew. My pictures looked like things I drew as a kid and I loved ‘em!

So with no formal art education you will see I am still learning. And I hope to always continue to learn and allow my artwork to evolve as I do. I have so many ideas in my head I cant seem to do them fast enough. Not just drawings either—I have begun to sculpt with clay, sew fabric art and I have even tried the oh-so-scary painting. I am just loving this!

My work is mostly based on the simple but eye catching solid black contour lines. I never know what I am going to draw or paint until I am finished. I usually start out with an eye or a simple square frame and let things just happen. To me this is a big deal. My biggest hurdle was learning when to stop. When I was younger I would spend hours on a picture only to ruin it by adding way too much detail. Now I love the fact I just seem to know when to stop. I enjoy keeping things simple. I think this will be a big deal to some of my close friends too. My friends know how anal I can be about certain details but that’s mostly work—that doesn’t count. Does it? Oh, I don’t care. For now most of my artwork is very very simple. And those pieces that aren’t are a refreshing change.
