Muscle Power, Page 2

Actually, the picture on the previous page depicts Vassily Alexeev doing one of the heaviest olympic weight lifts in history. He lifted 255 kg, or about 560 pounds, at the Munich Olympics in 1972. (Of course, no one knows what kinds of things the Soviet trainers had put in his system at the time.)

Yes, I have started lifting some weights, to stay in shape, prevent back problems, and improve my conditioning. (I inadvertently dropped a 50-pound dumbbell on my finger soon after I started to work out.) My goal was to be able to lift just one third of the weight those guys at the World's Strongest Man Competition lift. At my best, I have been able to deadlift 340 pounds (about 150 kg) and squat 410 pounds (about 190 kg), but only after my wife cooked me an extra portion of Spätzle. [Note: Before changing my eating habits, not only did I work out drug-free, but protein-free as well...] For pictures, see here, and for my own private 140lbs Husafelt stone experience, go here

Compare this to these competitors:

mag.jpg (13496 bytes) Magnus Ver Magnusson, who squated 964 pounds (433 kg) when winning in 1995 (here shown with 904).

Chen Xiaomin, Agata Wrobel, and Ding Meiyuan at the Sydney Olympics (Chen lifted 130kg/290lbs at 63kg/140lbs bodyweight in the clean-and-jerk; Ding's weight was 165kg/370lbs in the same event.)

Way to go!
