The Green Building Program at UVM

UVM, in keeping with its vision to become the preeminent small public research University in the study of the environment and health, has made a strong commitment to Green Buildings.

The Green Building Coordinator works with various departments to help implement the University's green building policy and related procedures. Green building is based on a set of design and construction practices that significantly reduce the negative impact of buildings on the environment and occupants in five broad areas:

The University has shown leadership Green Building Practices through the following:
  1. The development and implementation of a comprehensive Construction and Demolition Waste Reduction and Recycling Management System, funded by an EPA grant. The grant products include a first of its kind web based tool to assist contractors and university workers in documenting waste diverted from local landfills, development of an Environmental Management System outline of the C&D process, architectual specifications for construction project management and signage appropriate to those specifications.
  2. Adoption of a University policy (available here in PDF format) that the US Green Building Councils's LEED standard will be used for the design and construction of all major new campus building projects.
