James R. Schaefer, managing director and head of the Global Power Investment Banking sector at UBS who graduated from UVM in 1991 with a degree in business, will give a lecture titled "The Energy Future of the United States" on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 2:30 p.m. in 002 Kalkin.
Schaefer's role at the Swiss investment firm UBS puts him in the forefront of the global economic community. UBS is the world's largest manager of private wealth assets and the second largest bank in Europe as measured by market capitalization and profitability. UBS also has the largest trading floor in North America at their capital market's headquarters in Stamford, Conn.
Schaefer's position at UBS allows him to interact with global power and gas clients on a regular basis, giving him a unique perspective on the future of American energy consumption. As America faces an increasingly expensive oil market, Schaefer is in a position to help dictate the terms of change in the financial sector as Americans search for energy alternatives. While his lecture will focus on Energy Futures of the United States, Schaefer will also comment extensively on the current global financial crisis.
After graduating from UVM, Schaefer completed his M.B.A. with honors at the University of Michigan, followed by years spent doing mergers and acquisitions of the power and gas sector at Chemical Bank (later merged with Chase Manhattan), Salomon Brothers, and Lehman Brothers.
Seating is limited at the event; those interested in attending are encouraged to arrive early.
