The University of Vermont's Fleming Museum of Art announces the opening of two new exhibitions, kicking off their Fall 2011 season: "Wosene Worke Kosrof: Paintings from the Paul Herzog and Jolene Tritt Collection" and "Systems in Art." Both exhibitions are open through Dec. 16, 2011. A gala opening reception for these exhibitions and others will be held on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 5:30 p.m.
Housed in the museum's Woloctt Gallery, the Wosene Worke Kosrof exhibit explores the role of language and graphic systems in Ethiopian-born artist's work. For more than 35 years, Wosene has mined the aesthetic potential of Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia. Read more about the exhibit.
"Systems in Art" examines the ways in which artists and artisans have used systems -- both simple and complex -- to establish parameters for their work, to explore spatial relationships, create patterns and grids for technical purposes, and to invent new grammars and rationalities. For this exhibit, students from the Honors College's "Math in the Arts" course contributed research and writing for selected object labels. Read more.
Throughout the fall, free admission on Wednesdays is provided through sponsorship of the IBM corporation.
