Section Description
Section Description: This course is a practical, skills-based introduction to reading and analyzing plays. It covers a wide variety of historical and contemporary styles of drama while offering diagnostic tools for better understanding how different plays accomplish their theatrical goals. This course will be helpful for anyone interested in playwriting, screenwriting, acting, directing, theatrical design, dramaturgy, or related artistic fields.
Section Expectation
Section Expectations: After completing this course, students should be able to: • Appreciate how and why different varieties of drama each have their own forms, styles, and genres; • Identify and analyze the key elements of dramatic structure evident in plays of the past and present; • Apply diagnostic techniques to individual play scripts in order to clarify one's own taste and aesthetic preferences; • Understand the value of drama for representing a wide variety of human experiences.
Evaluation
Evaluation: The grading for the course is based primarily on short-answer comprehension quizzes for each play assigned. Additionally, there is one written essay that involves applying analytic tools from the course to a play of one's choice.
